Respect means recognising the dignity and worth of another person, regardless of age, gender, ethnic background or social status. As a result of a two-way interaction respect is based on mutual understanding and recognition.
Showing respect for others demonstrates a willingness to listen to and learn from others. An important pre-requisite for working successfully together – In a team, as a leader and with stakeholders at all levels.
Those who show respect for others will normally also receive respect. Nevertheless, it can happen that people ride over you and generally do not recognise other points of view and opinions in general. These people dominate and manipulate others to push through with their own goals. It is therefore important to be able to set clear and binding boundaries especially in such situations.
Many people fear negative consequences of a clear “NO”. If you have the feeling that your boundaries are being overstepped, you will learn to make them clear and defend them without harming the relationship. If you do not communicate nor defend your own boundaries you will lose sympathy and respect in any case. Not a good idea if you need support from powerful stakeholders to realize new ideas and initiatives and to climb up the career ladder.
