Negotiate your Worth

Role Model Event
Zurich, April 11, 2019

Have you missed this great event Advance at Cembra Money Bank? No worries. Read on to get the most important insights into how women can negotiate for what they want, need and deserve in their careers. “Kick ass”, as Wies Bratby, Chief Enthusiasm Officer at Women in Negotiation, would say. She shared her wisdom with our community and fired us up for kick ass negotiations.

NOT NEGOTATING YOUR CAREER WILL HARM YOU IN THE SHORT AND LONG TERM

By not communicating your value and your career aspirations, you get overlooked for promotions and pay rises. By not negotiating your salaries, you don’t just leave money on the table, but you also end up feeling resentful and unhappy. And that doesn’t just negatively impact you, but also the organizations that you work for, because when you feel like that, it’s difficult to do your best work.

Negotiating your career is good for you and your company

In turn, when you know how to have these career defining conversations effectively, both you AND the company you work for benefit. You, because you now do work you love and you get paid (ie valued) really well for it. And your company benefits from you showing up every day with that sense of inspiration, excitement and commitment.

NEGOTIATING CAN IMPROVE THE RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR BOSS

Women often worry that when they speak up for themselves, they will harm the relationship they have carefully built up with their boss. Or for a new role: with the hiring manager. However, if you harness your feminine super powers and focus on the other side and their interests, and share your own, then it’s very much possible to improve the relationship with whoever is sitting on the other side of the negotiation table.

WOMEN ARE GREAT NEGOTIATORS

Women may feel that they are not good at negotiating, and this in turn may keep them from trying in the first place. However, as all the experts agree and the research supports: women are great negotiators! They have everything it takes to come to win – win outcomes: collaboration skills, listening, empathy, communication skills, etc. So with the right mindset, tools and preparation you can grow into a negotiations ninja, creating a WIN-WIN outcome for all interested parties!

YOU HAVE TO KNOW YOUR VALUE INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY

When you negotiate your career, it’s important to build your confidence first. One of the ways you can do this, is through journaling your achievements throughout the day. Another important step is doing quantitative and qualitative research regarding the pay and benefits of the job you are doing or the one you want. Once you know what the market pays for your skillset, decide what’s the minimum value you are willing to accept and what is an ambitious but realistic goal and go for it!

YOU CAN LEARN HOW TO NEGOTiATE

Negotiating is not a rocket since. Many tools and strategies are proven to bring the desired outcomes and if you are serious about negotiating your career, you can learn them too. Ever heard of ‘interest-based negotiations’, the power of ‘active listening’ or ‘enlarging the pie’ during a negotiation? Find the best mentor you can, compress time through learning from them and with practice you can master this skillset and grow to love these career defining conversations!
