Session 2 – The power of career sponsorship

Sponsors accelerate careers. The key, we learned at Malvika Singh’s session, is to move our relationships, which for women often stop at ‘mentor’ through to ‘authentic advocates’. Easier said than done. But certainly, doable with the right insights:

Key takeaways

  • It’s on leaders to learn the difference between mentorship and sponsorship and commit to doing it. Equally, it’s on women to be bold and deepen the relationships they already have – it’s a two-way street.
  • There’s an altruistic and an egotistic reason for leaders to sponsor people – and that’s ok – a win-win leads to greater success!
  • Counter inherent bias by being ‘intentional’ with your sponsorship – whether it’s a program designed specifically for women in tech, or an individual leader saying to themselves ‘I am going to sponsor someone different from me’. Intentionality can keep you on track.

session 3 – Ambitious. qualified. overlooked!

Margit Vunder presented the newest whitepaper by Advance in collaboration with the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and EY Switzerland on the untapped talent pool of women over 40. The conducted survey which includes over 1,200 professional women in Switzerland across all sectors and management levels explored the respondents’ perspectives on their career ambitions and perceived opportunities.

Takeaways

  • Despite their qualifications, expertise and ambitions, women over 40 in Switzerland often find themselves overlooked in the workplace, facing barriers to career progression.
  • With 90% expressing a desire for further career advancement, age did not diminish their ambitions. Women have sustained drive throughout their professional journeys. Neither does parenthood impact women‘s ambitions, which emphasizes the need for more opportunities.
  • What if we challenged the conventional notion that most pivotal career steps must predominantly occur in the age group 31-40? Such a shift in perspective shines a light on a significant pool of qualified and ambitious female professionals who, until now, have remained invisible as viable candidates for leadership succession.

session 4 – unlock your negotiation superpower

Negotiation is about building relationships through a give-and-take approach and an exchange of value. Thanks to Gabriela Müller Mendoza’s boot camp for unlocking our negotiation superpower, we are well-equipped to rock future negotiations. Here are her five golden nuggets.

takeaways

  • Clarify format before substance: Before entering a negotiation, make sure you understand how the decision-making process works and who is involved. Don’t waste time talking to the wrong person.
  • Know your numbers: Before you sit down at the table, ensure that you know your value. Do a good benchmarking and show a potential offer to the Pauls and Ericas in your professional and personal world.
  • Silence is king: Sometimes it is better to keep quiet and wait for your negotiating partner to get back to you. Be patient and breathe!
  • Use the magic question ‘What would it take to…?’: This question unlocks a stuck negotiation. It remains hypothetical and respects the expertise of the person on the other side of the table.
  • Don’t split the difference & grant small concessions: Never meet them halfway. Go down only with small numbers and use the term ‘if…then’.

session 5 – breaking gender patterns in money habits to empower future generations

What we as parents, but also as a society overall, role model in terms of money habits hugely influences what the young generation will do when it’s their turn to manage their own finances. Dr. Mara Harvey & Cristina Jaeger explained how money is empowerment and how important it is that more women improve their financial literacy. That is how it’s done:

takeaways

  • Our financial habits are formed by age seven! Let’s be mindful what are the first money experiences we give to our next generations. Instead of saying to your child: ‘We can’t afford that’ say ‘We choose to prioritize on something else’.
  • The biggest gift for children is to teach them the delayed gratification and to keep them away from digital devices for as long as possible.
  • A symbolic glass wall has two doors: spending and earning. Women and girls are encouraged (by social media) to spend and men are expected to carry (often the total) earning load.
  • 10% pay gap leads to 43% wealth gap, so make sure you upskill on negotiation!
