PwC-EN - We advance

«The role of all leaders is to lead by example, advance women into important leadership positions and support them, whether they have a family or not, so that they can be successful.»

Andreas Staubli, CEO PwC Switzerland

Interview with andreas staubli

«Stronger when equal»: We are all stronger, when equal. What does this mean for you personally?

There is a direct correlation between diversity and high-performing teams. A balanced female and male workforce is one key element of diversity. To realise the full potential of a diverse team, one must ensure equal treatment in all dimensions of behaviour and personal career development.

What advice about creating a diverse and inclusive workplace would you have liked to have as a young CEO?

First, talk more explicitly about unconscious bias and the challenges of achieving equal opportunities within the firm. Second, encourage new working models, for example in the area of part-time, more rigorously while openly addressing the challenges, too. And third, invest in discussing the topic with middle management as a priority.

«My personal wish for progress is to really achieve proportional career advancement to top leadership across all businesses within 10 years. We need to achieve a societal change in Switzerland.»

How should we raise our children in order to get to gender equality faster? How would you advise young people who want to have a career and a family?

I recommend young people to engage with experienced leaders who are managing their career and family life well. Learn from different leaders and draw your own conclusions about what best fits your personal needs and environment. Openly discuss your plans and concerns with your coach and consider having a mentor supporting you through challenging times.

10 years Advance, engaging for a gender equal workplace. What is your wish for progress in gender balance in the next 10 years? And how do you see the role of leaders on this journey?

My personal wish for progress is to really achieve proportional career advancement to top leadership across all businesses within 10 years. We need to achieve a societal change in Switzerland.

The role of all leaders is to lead by example, advance women into important leadership positions and support them, whether they have a family or not, so that they can be successful.

How is Gender Diversity connected with the business success of your company?

Our experience shows that diverse teams regarding aspects such as age, gender or cultural background approach challenges in a more innovative way. Due to greater diversity, we can include multiple perspectives at work, which allows us to develop holistic solutions for our clients. Therefore, diversity is closely linked to our corporate success. We have mapped out our I&D strategy accordingly and are focusing closely on gender balance and advancement for FY23-25.

what are your three most successful initiatives and measures to balance the gender representation in management?

Our strongest achievement in 2022 was that we increased women in partner admissions from 17% in 2021 to 29% in 2022. This proved to us that commitment via setting aspirational targets and promoting women to the top is the right thing to do and that we are on the right track. Since 2018 we have been Equal Salary Certified.

Why did PWC choose THE artwork «EVEN 2023»? What are the messages that PWC would like to convey to their co-workers and beyond?

We have chosen «Even» by Andreas Schneider because it reflects a woman’s life being constantly in movement, and also because with the light projection it shows both the light and the shadow sides of movement.

For us, the «EVEN» Advancine is a sculpture which shows a woman in modern life – on the move, shining in the light and multidimensional.
