Campaign 2021 Suba Umathevan - We advance

How I got here

“Unlock your courage. Make daring career moves, stepping entirely out of your comfort zone”.

Suba Umathevan, CEO Drosos Foundation

What was your dream career as
a girl?

My dream job as a girl was to be a politician, an ambassador and a doctor. A strange combination, you might think, but as a refugee from Sri Lanka, my dad told me so many stories about political events since I was a little girl – why we fled Sri Lanka and who could make a difference. I knew politics was important; ambassadors influenced negotiations; doctors saved lives. My background and upbringing shaped my career path and where I am today – leading a foundation that creates lasting change in children and young people’s lives.

What was your aha-moment when you realized that gender stereotypes may (or do) have an impact on your career development?

How did you deal with it?

When I was a student, I was keen to start an IT apprenticeship. I was told that this was not exactly a job for girls. I was told that it was hard to combine with a family since you have to work odd hours. Sadly, it was the first of many moments that I realized that I am not being treated equally in the workplace as a woman.

How did I deal with it? I turned women’s empowerment and advancing gender equality into my career. Over the past decade, I have learned how much impact we can create as individuals. I have learned how much gender equality is good for everyone and how men are our most important champions and allies. My father, my brother, and my partner are my biggest fans and greatest supporters.

What is your number 1 advice for career aspiring women?

Unlock your courage. Make daring career moves, stepping entirely out of your comfort zone. Along the way, motivate and inspire other (young) women. Share your stories of struggle and failure. Embrace your imperfect story.
