Campaign 2021 Robert Itschner - We advance

Would I be where I am?

“dIVERSITY IS STRENGTH – STRENGTH THAT WE NEED TO MEET THE GREAT CHALLENGES OF OUR TIME.”

Robert Itschner, Country Managing Director ABB Switzerland

If you were a woman, do you think you would have made it to the top leadership ranks? Why (not)?

A “Roberta” of my generation would have had a much harder time, I’m afraid. For instance, the likelihood of me choosing a technical apprenticeship and studies in engineering, which in my case was a key to my professional development, would have been rather low.

Unfortunately, even today the percentage of women among graduates in technical disciplines is still far too low, especially for a leading location of innovation like Switzerland.

How have gender stereotypes influenced your career choices and professional development?

And do you feel these stereotypes are present in your current work environment?

Supported by my personal environment, I was fortunate enough to be able to pursue my interests and passions from an early age, through my studies to my career in engineering and management. Encouraging this enthusiasm for technology in young people, is an important concern for us at ABB. For example, we hold our own Girls’ Tech Days and support the development of special, creative teaching tools.

We are convinced: In order to come up with the innovative solutions necessary for the great challenges of our time, such as climate change, we need the most diverse talents.

How do you personally act against gender stereotypes in your environment?

It is important to me personally that we exclude bias, especially gender bias, in our decision-making processes, starting with recruiting. At the same time, I think it is crucial to set specific goals. As part of ABB’s “Global Diversity and Inclusion Strategy”, the proportion of women in management positions is to be doubled across the Group by 2030. That’s what we have committed to, and that’s what we are working on.

I’m proud to work at ABB, in a company that lives by the principle of equal opportunities, regardless of gender, origin, faith or sexual orientation.
